Knowing there was a great need, Holy Spirit Lutheran Church (HSLC), Juno Beach, Florida decided to incorporate reading glasses into the services they offered during their yearly mobile medical mission trip to the Village of Hope (VoH), Haiti. Three Girl Scouts worked with HSLC to raise money to purchase glasses. They also collected used and new glasses which they sorted into strengths. The girls marked and packaged the glasses which were then carried to Haiti by members of the HSLC mission team. Approximately 400 glasses were delivered to the VoH by the team in February 2018.
Doctors at the daily mobile clinics determined who needed glasses and sent the patients to a table where all the glasses were displayed. A simple eye test was given to determine the power of eye glass needed. It was amazing to see the smiles on peoples’ faces as they put on their glasses and could see clearly for the first time in many years! In just 5 days 127 people were helped to see clearly again. The remaining glasses were left at the VoH so future mission trips could use them and by early April only 100 pairs remained. HSLC continues to collect glasses. The girls packaged another 67 pairs of glasses that were taken to the VoH in May by a team from Advent Lutheran, Boca Raton, Florida.
With such a demand, we are hoping that other churches that support VoH will put programs in place to help supply reading glasses to the Village of Hope. Glasses can be purchase from Restoring Vision https://restoringvision.org/ for as little as 50 cents a pair. The website also provides information of how you can incorporate reading glasses into your mission trips.
