Ganthier, Haiti
When VOH first arrived in Ganthier nearly 30 years ago, they discovered a small, rural village outside of Port-au-Prince. Over the years, this small village has been developed and has become a suburb of PAP. VOH created the Village of Hope School in collaboration with “Mammie” Carol Herget. The Village of Hope School has grown from 60 children and 1 building into a campus of 9 buildings on 30 acres, 70 Haitian teachers and staff serving more than 500 students.
In 2011, VOH built the VOH Health Center which has provided the community with Physicians, Nurses, Lab Technicians, Pharmacist, Field Agents, and Support Staff. This staff provides primary health care to the students, staff, and teachers at VOH School as well as to their families and the rural community.
In 2023, during the most challenging year in our history, Village of Hope provided HOPE through education and healthcare despite being surrounded by extreme gang violence.
- More than 500 students received an education.
- More than 50,000 meals were provided to our school students.
- We waived all tuition fees so families could use these funds to feed their children.
- We provided jobs to more than 90 teachers, staff, and health care workers.
- VOH provided healthcare to the community during a time when most hospitals and health centers were closed.
After many conversations and prayers, our board and leadership in Haiti have decided to keep the Village of Hope campus in Ganthier closed until August of 2024. We believe that if we were to open, we would be putting our students, teachers, and parents at great risk of harm. We also believe that at least half of our students and families have fled the area for the provinces outside of Port-au-Prince and to Cap Haitien, which has become a haven for many.
